The Congress Room

After the french-german war of 1870-1871, as the two assemblies of the new Republic sit in Versailles, this big assembly room is set up at the center of the South Wing. Since the governement moved in Versailles, the National Assembly elected in Versailles in February 1871 gathered in the royal Opera. However, after the creation of the two assemblies through the constitutional laws of 1875, a new assembly room was needed as the Senate kept the royal Opera. The architect Edmond de Joly is chosen to build the new room in which the National Assembly moved in 1876 and stayed to 1879. Inspired by the two assembly rooms of the Palais Bourbon and the Palais of Luxembourg, the Congress Room is a mix and a reinterpretation between different styles of the past, including from Versailles. With 800 seats, it stayed the place where the presidential elections were held until 1958, before hosting the constitutional revision votes. The last time the French Parliament gathered in Congress was on 22 June 2009. On this occasion, the President of the Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, expressed himself in front of the two chambers (first application of the constitutional revision of the 23 July 2008).
