Lire au jardin 2012

Home page

To mark the 10th Rendez-vous aux Jardins, the palace of Versailles is organising Lire au jardin 2012, the second Fête du Livre et de la Presse JARDIN (Festival of Gardening Books and Magazines, in French only) . This event will be held on 1, 2 and 3 June 2012 in the gardens of the Grand Trianon.

A worldwide reference for the French formal garden, the estate of Versailles also contains a great diversity of green spaces. Apart from the gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, it offers strollers the romantic setting of the English-Chinese garden of Marie-Antoinette’s estate and its more rural grasslands, undergrowth, vineyards and market gardens.

Proud of these natural riches, the palace of Versailles organised in 2011 the first Festival of Gardening Books and Magazines. Backed by numerous partners (the publishers Rustica, Le Seuil and Terre vivante, the Nature et Découverte shops, etc.), this first festival attracted a large audience that brought 26,000 visitors to the Trianon palaces, 16,000 to the exhibitors’ stands, and 1,000 participants in workshops and at lectures.

This year once again, all the publications relating to gardens and the art of gardening will be in the limelight. This second festival will feature genres as varied as practical guides, books for children, illustrated books and essays on gardens, ancient treatises, books on botany and horticulture, photographs and the numerous magazines dedicated to the world of gardening.

In addition to this very comprehensive round-up of publications on nature and gardens, a wide programme of activities will be proposed: book signings, round-table discussions, gardening demonstrations and workshop, a reading area, photography exhibitions, “scent” rambles, concerts, etc.

Lire au jardin, the second Festival of Gardening Books and Magazines, will also feature the first Lire au jardin prize which will be awarded to publications in 3 categories. It will be awarded by a panel of judges based on a short list selected by a reading committee chaired by Alain Baraton, Head Gardener of Trianon and Marly, and made up of gardening book professionals.

Thanks to Mr Alain Renouf, from the Lire au jardin bookshop at 22 rue Constantine in Tours, for agreeing to share with this event the title “Lire au jardin”.
