Lire au jardin 2012 Lire au jardin 2012

This event is organised as part of the “Rendez-vous aux Jardins” open gardens event and the Year of Le Nôtre which celebrates the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre, designer of the gardens of Versailles.

“Lire au jardin” is the great yearly meeting for those who work in the field of gardening books and magazines. In the shade of the poplars and lime trees of the Estate of Marie-Antoinette, discover a wide panorama of publications relating to gardens and the art of gardening: practical books and documentaries, picture books and art books, magazines, essays and reviews, children’s comic books, novels and books of tales dedicated to the gardening world are showcased in the enchanting setting of the gardens of Trianon.

“Lire au jardin” also features the Versailles “Lire au jardin” Book Prize (link in french), presided over for the second year running by Didier Decoin, of the Académie Goncourt. This prize awards the best publications on the theme of the “garden” in three complementary categories: “Graine de jardin” (children’s books), “Esprit de jardin” (essays, novels, books of illustrations) and “Jardin pratique” (books giving advice). The reading committee, made up of gardening book professionals, will meet in early April to draw up its short list from which the three prose-winners will be selected.

Lire au jardin” also features a large cultural programme dedicated to the discovery of books and gardens. This year, the theme of “Secret Garden(s)” and "link between past and present" will be the connecting thread of the meeting and activities. Interviews, book-signing sessions by outstanding writers on the world of gardens, multidisciplinary round-table discussions, readings, short-story competition for schoolchildren (link in french), a large temporary library for reading in the gardens, advice from the gardeners of Versailles, thematic tours of the Estate, etc. “Lire au jardin” is more than a book fair; it offers you a delightful opportunity for pleasure and mediation in the gardens!
