A monumental cloth in the Cour Royale

An original sponsorship for a monumental cloth

In the framework of the restoration of the roofs of the central section of the Palace, the Cour Royale (Royal Courtyard) of the Palace of Versailles is occupied until June 2012 by an immense scaffolding. By covering this structure measuring over 1,000 sq m, the Palace of Versailles wishes to greet all the visitors to the Palace with an artistic, monumental and surprising project that highlights its architecture and the gardens.

During the lifetime of this ephemeral work, the artist Pierre Delavie wishes to reintroduce nature into the architecture of the Palace by bringing together in a single image a dreamlike vision of the two faces of Versailles: Versailles the court and garden.

Nexans, a world expert in cables and a sponsor of the Palace of Versailles since 2007, has funded the execution of this artwork and thus participates in highlighting the campaign for the adoption of the trees, benches and statues of the park of Versailles.

Athem, in charge of the installation, supplied the conception of the artwork as its sponsorship through providing skills. The identical reproduction of the façade against the deceptive background of the park of Versailles surprises the visitor in a place initially dominated by stone. This architecture acts like a partition and reveals nothing of the gardens: the large perspectives laid down by the lime trees of the park and the disciplined nature of the groves where vases, groups of sculptures, statues and works by the greatest artists of the 17th century dialogue with the marble and stone benches.

The restoration work on the roofs of the central section of the Palace of Versailles began in 2008 and will be completed in spring 2012. It benefits from the sponsorship of the Monnoyeur group.
