The Château de Versailles is putting on a new photography exhibition. Versailles photographed brings together about 150 prints of well-known photographers who have turned their gaze on the Château since the early days of this technique to bring out its beauty and its multiple facets.
Backed up by the success of its exhibitions Versailles in the Shade and All-out War, the Château de Versailles is putting on a new photography exhibition. Versailles photographed brings together about 150 prints of well-known photographers who have turned their gaze on the Château since the early days of this technique to bring out its beauty and its multiple facets.
The Galerie de Pierre haute will become a genuine gallery of photography hosting the prints of great artists who have left their mark on the history of their art such as Eugène Atget, Man Ray, Brassaï, André Kertész, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Dora Maar, Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson... as well great names of contemporary photography: Robert Polidori, Raymond Depardon, Jean-Loup Sieff, Michael Kenna, Jun Shiraoka and Luigi Ghirri.
The exhibition proposes an approach to the image of the place over time based on four main themes. "Versailles at the heart of history" shows the Château as the theatre of great historic events. "Stone, marble and silk" highlights the magnificence of the buildings' architecture while evoking the more intimate apartments that contrast with the monumental aspect of the place. "Nature tamed" presents the park in its dreamlike, poetic, strict and austere aspects. Lastly, "Dreaming Versailles" pays homage to the visitors and the different films inspired by this exceptional place. The exhibition will thus pay homage as much to the Château as to the art of photography.
