The King’s Flowers

The King’s Flowers

From 2 July to 29 September 2013, discover the exhibition The King’s Flowers. Paintings, watercolours on vellum & parterres at the Grand Trianon.

The exhibition

As part of the Year of Le Nôtre, the exhibition The King’s Flowers. Paintings, watercolours on vellum and parterres recreates over the summer the refined and mannered atmosphere that dominated in the gardens of the Grand Trianon during the Ancien Régime.

Thanks to an exceptional loan from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, the exhibition presents the masterpieces of the royal collection of watercolours on vellum initiated by Gaston d’Orléans, the uncle of Louis XIV. Alongside these delicate and fragile botanical works, it present archive documents and flower paintings from the collections of the Palace of Versailles.

The exhibition also evokes the ephemeral first palace of Trianon, the Porcelain Trianon, and recreates the scents of Flora’s Palace thanks to the historic replanting of the parterres of the Grand Trianon by the gardeners of Versailles, based on documents from the period.
