Some works of the exhibition
From 17 March 2012 to 10 November 2013, the exhibition Roulez carrosses!, consisting mostly of exhibits taken from the collections of the palace of Versailles, will be presented in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Arras.
With the opening Roulez carrosses! (Coaches for courts!) the palace of Versailles takes part for the first time in a process of cultural decentralisation. In the framework of a partnership concluded in July 2011 with the region of Nord-Pas De Calais and the town of Arras, the collections of Versailles will be presented over the next 10 years in a series of 5 major and long exhibitions (18 months), in the Abbaye Saint-Vaast, Musée des Beaux-Arts of Arras.
Solemn entry of Louis XIV and queen Maria Theresa into Arras, 22 July 1667 by Van der Meulen
Roulez carrosses! is the first exhibition in France consecrated to horse-drawn coaches. Covering over 1,000 sq m, artworks and objects testify to the functioning and development of these vehicles: paintings, sculptures, sleighs, sedan chairs and horse harnesses are presented, as well as several exceptional coaches such as those used for the wedding procession of Napoleon I, the coach of the coronation of Charles X and the impressive hearse of Louis XVIII.
These exhibits will be displayed chronologically in an innovative museographic setting combining reconstructions, animated demonstrations and multimedia. They will enable visitors to review the history of France from Louis XIV to the 3rd Republic, discover the links between the palace of Versailles and Arras, and learn about the functioning and development of horse-drawn coaches.
