Julia Migenes sings Schubert

Julia Migenes sings Schubert

Saturday 29 January 2011 at 8:30 pm

What makes up the mystery of the music of Schubert? Through his work and writings, Philippe Calvario explores the complexity of this great artist and genius in this concert. Julia Migenes and Philippe Calvario perform together once more (after Angels in America at the Châtelet theatre and Alter Ego, on tour). This time they share the stage in the company of the pianist Edouard Ferlet, who accompanies their reveries inspired by this major artist.

Monteverdi: The Crowning of Poppea

Monteverdi: The Crowning of Poppea

Friday 4 & Saturday 5 February 2011 at 8 pm
Sunday 6 February 2011 at 3 pm

In 1632, at the peak of his Venetian career, Monteverdi presented a new opera for the San Giovanni e Paolo theatre that had just opened, one of the first theatres in Europe to charge for admission. To outdo the other performances available in Venice, the story of the immoral Poppea manipulating the cruel Nero to achieve her most tragic designs turned out to be an idea of genius. This masterpiece filled with life, poison and passion is performed by a brilliant team of soloists led magnificently by Jérôme Corréas. The staging by Christophe Rauck was greeted worldwide as the “crowning” version of “Poppea”.

A true pearl of baroque music composed by Henry Purcell, with its intrigue rich in reversals and its cast of colourful characters, King Arthur has been an outstanding and lasting success since its first performance in 1690. The legend is brought back to life by the conductor Hervé Niquet, and directed by Corinne & Gilles Benizio, alias Shirley & Dino, who combine poetry and fantasy without any attenuation of the powerful music of Purcell: a perceptive and emotion-filled performance that enthused the audience on its first night! A production of the Opéra national de Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon.

Purcell: Dido and Aeneas

Purcell: Dido and Aeneas

Sunday 20 March 2011 at 5 pm

The only true opera of Purcell is pure perfection: brief, brilliant, filled with emotion and airs that have passed on to posterity. The Trojan Aeneas is the guest of Dido, queen of Carthage, whom he seduces and then abandons. Crowned by her recent award of a Victoire de la Musique, the mezzo-soprano Isabelle Druet takes on in Dido an indispensable and royal role filled with pathos. Bernard Levy directs with finesse the piercing lyricism of this unforgettable work. A production of the Théâtre Musical de Besançon.
