DONATION FROM THE EDMOND J. SAFRA FOUNDATION

On 20 February 2014, Louis XV’s Choisy commode joined the collections of the Palace of Versailles.

Louis XV’s Choisy Commode

Unique bronze and lacquer decoration

This exceptional commode was made by cabinet maker Antoine-Robert Gaudreaus. Its black and gold decoration is made up of gilded bronzes mounted on Japanese lacquered screens from Louis XIV’s collections. Produced in 1744, it was delivered to the Royal Chambers at the Château de Choisy, one of Louis XV’s favourite residences.

From the Royal residences to the apartments of Mesdames

During the reign of Louis XVI, the commode left Choisy for the Château de Saint-Cloud. It was in the bedroom of Madame Elisabeth, the King’s sister, and then in Marie Antoinette’s chambers.

The commode in the apartments of Mesdames

Louis XV’s Choisy commode has now joined the collections of the Palace of Versailles, rounding out the furnishings in the apartments of Mesdames. It is now in Madame Victoire’s bedroom, daughter of Louis XV.

Donation by the Edmond J. Safra Foundation – 2014, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Edmond J. Safra, the Foundation’s President.
