The Fountains Play to Music

The Fountains Play to Music - Every week-end and days off fron 4th April to 25th october

Come along to discover the fountains and groves and their jets of water soaring high to the sound of music. Several series of aquatic performances are on offer. Whatever your choice, they will allow you to appreciate many masterpieces of the Gardens. Strollers and garden enthusiasts can also wander off into the most secret places of the estate.

Among the masterpieces that the history of France has left to the universal artistic heritage, Versailles is the most intimately linked to the king’s desire. Louis XIV decided to commission a monumental work of art, uniting with genius the greatest artists of his time, which led to the construction of an incomparable palace over fifty years. Symbol and seat of a triumphant monarchy, Versailles was both a political as well as an artistic project.

In a society in which the appearance of the king was so close to the image of a god, all the arts were called upon to serve the "renown" of Louis XIV. Bringing together a glorious panel of the most brilliant French and Italian artists, he wished to put France in the front rank of his period’s artistic creativity. Architecture with Le Vau, Hardouin Mansart and De Cotte, music with Lully, Charpentier, Marais, Couperin and Lalande, literature with Molière, Quinault and Racine, painting with Lebrun, sculpture with Coysevox and Bernini, garden design with Le Nôtre and stage machinery with Vigarani came together in a masterpiece entirely in the king’s image. Inspirer and protector of the arts, Louis XIV was the origin of the emergence of new styles that marked the artistic history of Europe for a century: lyrical tragedy, French classicism and Racinian tragedy are intimately linked to his sovereign will.

During the first two decades of his reign, when the palace was still in the construction stage, the gardens received very close attention from the king, who wished them to be the incarnation of his splendour and to be immediately legendary. They were laid out on more than a thousand hectares with the most advanced techniques used for the heavy work: the digging of the grand canal, the construction of large reservoirs, the installation of an immense network of water pipes to supply the fountains enlivening each sculpture and each grove. The best Italian designers of fountains, the Francine, built what has come down to us as the most sumptuous aquatic spectacle shaped by the arts.

As the heirs of the artistic heritage of Versailles, it is our duty to keep alive the arts alive in this exceptional estate by giving a primordial place to the works created here over two centuries. The musical score for the Grandes Eaux Musicales was entrusted to Christophe Rousset who, with his Talens Lyriques group, is an ardent servitor of baroque music. The operas of Lully, Desmarest and Rameau have provided the overtures, chaconnes, dances and passacailles that fill each grove and fountain and give life back to their marble and gold statues: from the Colonnade to the Ballroom, the Pleasures of the Enchanted Isle are reborn ad infinitum.
