The gardens imagined by Louis XIV, a memory to be preserved.

Help bring the Sun King’s pride and joy, his gardens, back to life and follow the walk that Louis XIV recommended in his “Manière de montrer les jardins de Versailles” (The Way to Present the Gardens of Versailles).

A new project in honor of the gardens

In keeping with the “Adopt a tree, a bench or a statue in the Gardens of Versailles” sponsorship campaigns which have brought together over 700 sponsors since 2005, the Palace of Versailles is now proposing a new project highlighting the Gardens: the restoration of paintings in the Galerie des Cotelle at the Grand Trianon representing the Gardens of Versailles as they were under Louis XIV.

Each sponsor, whether a company or a private individual, can “adopt” the painting of his/her choice and contribute to bringing this exceptional group of paintings back to their original splendour while perpetuating the memory of the “Grand Siècle”.

The restoration of the paintings in the Cotelle Gallery

The paintings of the artists Jean Cotelle, Jean-Baptiste Martin l’Aîné and Etienne Allegrain in 1688-1689 constitute an attractive and precise illustrated book of the groves, ponds, and fountains described by Louis XIV in his Manière de montrer les jardins de Versailles (The Way to Present the Gardens of Versailles). A number of them have since disappeared or have been modified, such as the Labyrinth, destroyed in 1775.

Of the 24 paintings in the gallery, 15 need fundamental restorations of their support and the paint layer, which is entrusted to specialised restorers in each of these fields.
