The Apollo Salon

The painted and sculpted decoration on the ceiling of the Apollo Salon, whose central element is the painting of Apollo on his chariot, a masterpiece by Charles de La Fosse, is highly symbolic of the Sun King.

Louis XIV's Throne Room

The Apollo Salon, dedicated to the God of the Sun, the Arts and Peace and with whom Louis XIV identified, was once the most sumptuous room in the Grand Apartments and has had the most prestigious destiny: from the King’s Grand Bedchamber starting in 1673, it became the Throne Room in 1682.

The King granted audiences in this room.

The ceiling of the Apollo Salon

Symbol of the Sun King

The painted decoration on the ceiling is no doubt Charles de La Fosse’s masterpiece, illustrating his talent as a colourist. In the centre we can see Apollo on his chariot, accompanied by France personified and the procession of the seasons; the corners hold allegories of the Four Continents, and the beauty of the gilded framing stuccos sculpted by the Marsy brothers.

The myth of the Sun King, associated with the image of the god Apollo, takes on all its splendour in the central composition. The King, identified with the sun, dominates the rhythm of the seasons, the hours and the universe. The ancient subjects in the arch mouldings extol the grandeur of the Prince and the political order.

The ceiling restoration projet

The painted and sculpted decoration on the ceiling needs restoration work on its paintings and gilded stucco.

The restored central painting will then be showcased for the Charles de La Fosse exhibition to be held at the Palace of Versailles in 2015.
