THE SOUTH PERSPECTIVE OF THE GARDENS REGAINS ITS ORIGINAL SPLENDOUR

The Parterre of the Orangerie, with its grilles and sculpture groups, is a masterpiece of the south perspective of the Gardens designed by André Le Nôtre.

The grilles of the Orangerie

The grille of the "Cent Marches"

The Orangerie in the "Grand Siècle"

The Orangerie at Versailles was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1684 and 1686. Surrounded by two stairways called the “Cent Marches”, its Parterre is surrounded by grilles with pillars topped with sculpture groups. This grand composition organises the south perspective of the Garden of Versailles all the way to the wooded hillside of Satory.

Work on the grilles and the sculpted decoration in the Orangerie is now indispensable. It will also include the return of the Parterre’s sculpted groups and vases, which have disappeared, in order to restore the Orangerie to its original state.

Restoration of the grilles and sculpted groups

The restoration campaign includes the restoration of the damaged sections, locks and existing ornaments, restitution of missing elements, painting and gold leaf on the ironworks and the various ornaments, while the restoration of the sculpted groups will round out the whole.
