Louis XIV, The man and the King

19 October 2009 – 7 February 2010

For the first time, a major exhibition will be dedicated to Louis XIV, to the personality of the King

For the first time, a major exhibition will be dedicated to Louis XIV, to the personality of the King, his tastes, his collections, his influence on the arts of his time, as well as to the myth of the Sun King which developed during his own lifetime. Three hundred masterpieces – jewellery, paintings, engravings, sculptures and other objets d’art will be exhibited thanks to loans from prestigious international institutions.

During his long reign, Louis XIV reinvented the role of absolute monarch and brought about major changes to its representations. In this respect, the King founded Academies and Manufactures. He surrounded himself with the best contemporary artists in all fields – theatre, painting and music – turning art into the quintessence of political communication. Versailles, centre of the world, was then the proof that political power relies on artistic influence
