Open air musem
In line with the wishes of Louis XIV, Versailles was to become the largest open-air sculpture museum to ever exist. Today, 824 statues of all kinds still bring the gardens to life, more than 300 of which are made of marble, nearly 280 of lead and 100 of bronze and gilded bronze, as well as multiple casts – identical replicas of the preserved originals. This collection remains unrivalled, both in terms of quality and number of works collected and commissioned from the finest artists.
Practical information
The gardens of Versailles are open daily (except in extreme weather conditions: snow, high winds), access to the gardens is free except on the days of the Fountains Show and Musical Gardens (included in the ‘Passport’ ticket)

A campaign to protect the marble sculptures has been running since 2008 in order to save the greatest masterpieces that are most at risk. The restoration of original works and creation of identical copies have been made possible thanks to the support of our many patrons.
