Around 100 photographs of the Château de Versailles taken by Yasumichi Morita over the years are on exhibit at the Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo. The artist is known as a designer who creates a wide range of things, but in recent years he has also been active as an artist.

Over its four centuries, the Château de Versailles has occupied a special place in history and in the collective imagination, its beauty inspiring many artists and creators.

Yasumichi Morita has been a regular visitor to the Château de Versailles for several years, capturing in his monochrome photographs the genius of the palace's Baroque architecture bathed in dazzling golden light, while paying particular attention to the subtle differences produced by the light over the course of the four seasons.

This exhibition presents the diverse expressions of the Château de Versailles, as captured by the artist's unique sense of aesthetics. With around a hundred works, the exhibition presents the beauty of the château as a study in contrasts, between light and shadow, the visible and the hidden.

This collection of photographs, all taken in natural light, captures the lives of the past in the shadows formed by the changing light. On the occasion of this exhibition entitled "In Praise of Shadows", based on the work of the same name by the Japanese author Junichiro Tanizaki, Morita writes: "No place is more appropriate than the Château de Versailles to illustrate the light and shadows that accompany our lives, whatever the era".

Yasumichi Morita

Yasumichi Morita was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1967. He developed his career as an interior designer and has deployed his talents through a wide variety of graphics and products. He has diversified as an artist and, since 2015, has organised an annual photo exhibition in Paris.
