from 6 to 8 of october 2023 250th anniversary of the birth of Louis-Philippe
louis-philippe and versailles
The eldest child of the House of Orléans at the end of the Ancien Régime, Louis-Philippe, Duke of Valois, Chartres and then Orléans, succeeded his cousin Charles X, the last reigning monarch of the eldest branch of the Bourbons, to the French throne. Louis-Philippe was born and raised in Paris. He stayed at Versailles only on rare occasions and never planned to move into Louis XIV’s palace. However, he was passionate about history and decided to write a new page in the history of the palace by dedicating the monument built to the glory of the Great King to that of the entire nation: “to all the glories of France”. The project radically transformed the Palace, which became the setting of a grand visual narrative of French history combining history paintings and portraits of great figures.
