Restoration of the gates and sculpture groups of the Orangerie

The Parterre of the Orangerie, with its gates and sculpture groups, is the masterpiece of the south perspective of the Gardens designed by André Le Nôtre.

THE ORANGERIE of THE "GRAND SIÈCLE"

The Orangerie of Versailles was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1684 and 1686. Surrounded by two stairways called the “Cent-Marches”, its Parterre is delimited to the south by a balustrade flanked with two gates with pillars topped and sculpture groups. This grand composition organises the south perspective of the Gardens of Versailles all the way to the wooded hillside of Satory.

Work on the railings and the sculpted decoration in the Orangerie is now indispensable. It will also include the return of the Parterre sculpted groups and vases, which have disappeared, in order to restore the Orangerie to its original state.

RESTORATION OF THE GRILLES AND SCULPTED GROUPS

The restoration campaign includes:

  • the restoration of the damaged sections, locks and existing ornaments ;
  • the restitution of missing elements ;
  • the painting and gold leaf on the ironworks and the various ornaments ;
  • the restoration of the sculpted groups will round out the whole.
