For the 11th consecutive year, palaces all over Europe will be joining on social media to share their history, collections and behind-the-scenes stories to showcase their culture and common heritage. This year, #PalaceDay will be on the theme of textiles and silks.

Over the centuries, textile arts, tapestries and silk have embodied exceptional craftsmanship. Far more than mere decoration, textiles were omnipresent in the interiors of royal residences. Through their materials, colours and motifs, they shaped the atmosphere of spaces and conveyed the hierarchy, power, taste and identity of palaces.

At the Palace of Versailles, textiles reflect the taste and identity of each space through the diversity of their patterns and colours. French royal manufactories, particularly those of Lyon, Tours and Paris, contributed their expertise to the palace’s textile decorations. In the State Apartments, textiles conveyed the wealth and power of the monarchy, while in the private apartments, the sovereign expressed his personal tastes, following the fashions of his time.

The Network of European Royal Residencess and the Palace of Versailles Conservation Department present a virtual exhibition, “Royal Silks in Europe, Official Splendour and Private Apartments” bringing together 27 European royal residences. Brocades, damasks, chinés, and painted silks, discover these woven masterpiece that showcase the craftsmanship and refinement of royal residences across Europe.
