The Palace of Versailles opens the Congress Chamber to mark the 150th anniversary of the Third Republic.

The Congress Chamber was built in 1875 in just 6 months, and seats 1,500, making it larger than the National Assembly and Senate. The hall is a typical example of the official architecture of the Third Republic. Its style is both electric and sumptuous, inspired by the decor of Louis XIV. From 1875 to 1953, no fewer than sixteen Presidents of the Republic were elected here. Today, it is the venue for Congressional meetings, i.e. those of deputies and senators, during constitutional revisions or presidential addresses, as was the case on March 4, 2024 for the inclusion of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (abortion law) in the Constitution.

The apartment of the President of Congress, built at the same time, is also open to the public. It features neo-Louis XV decor, a style familiar from Versailles. The National Assembly returned the apartment to the Palace of Versailles in 2006.

general De gaulle's appartment at Trianon-sous-bois

 opening

The Trianon-sous-Bois wing of the Grand Trianon will be open from April 1st:

Every weekend, self-guided and guided tours, from 12:00pm to 6:30pm

Built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1687 to the specifications of Louis XIV, the Grand Trianon is a “small palace of pink marble and porphyry with delightful gardens”, where kings and queens stayed to escape the splendors of the Court.

In 1963, General De Gaulle took the initiative of refurbishing the site to welcome guests of the Republic, and to set up a presidential residence in the north wing, known as “Trianon-sous-bois”. A private residence was created for General de Gaulle. The first floor housed offices, lounges and a dining room, while the upper floor was given over to private apartments. From 1966 onwards, the President stayed here and received official guests.
