Louis XIV Rooms

The Louis XIV rooms are located on the first floor of the Palace’s North Wing, between the Royal Opera at one end and the central section, home to the Grand Apartments.

In a prelude to the visit to the Grand Apartments, these rooms give an overview of the century of Louis XIV through a gallery of paintings. From the King’s childhood to the creation of the academies, portraits of ministers and ladies of the court follow paintings of military campaigns and receptions for ambassadors.

Famous works such as Charles Le Brun’s portrait of Turenne and Hyacinthe Rigaud’s portrait of Madame Palatine are displayed alongside larger paintings such as the Establishment of the Academy of Sciences (six metres wide) by Henri Testelin.

This area, which has had a variety of uses over the centuries, has kept all the charm of its origins. Under the reign of Louis XIV, it held the apartments of the princes du sang. These were destroyed under King Louis-Philippe to make room for part of the Museum of French History.

The current presentation is faithful to the initial spirit: the colours of the embossed velvet draperies are a reminder of those of the Grand Siècle, the furniture reflects the apartment’s vocation, while the density of the paintings evokes the “end-to-end” hanging style popular in the 19th century.
